The Vicarage is a unique 200 year old Grade II Listed self catering house enjoying an unrivalled waterfront location. From the many rooms guests enjoy harbour views of the famous buildings such as the Round Tower at Portsmouth, the iconic Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth Harbour and HMS Warrior.

The Vicarage is of great historical importance to the area. Whilst the adjacent moat and ramparts were being built, Jane Austen was a regular visitor to her uncle who lived at the property and the records of the house detail Jane living here for different periods during the Napoleonic wars. The house still has in situ the original servants quarters and staircase. The interior even includes door handles and finger panels made out of gunmetal by French prisoners of war during this era.

The Vicarage features splendid proportions inside with a grand entrance hall and stunning staircase, period fireplaces in all of the rooms, plaster mouldings and sash windows with original shutters. The only modern features are a fully equipped gym, gas central heating throughout and fitted bathrooms.

The Vicarage has original floorboards throughout, two very large receptions rooms with the living room and dining room featuring working fireplaces. The Master Bedroom and living room both have balconies overlooking the private wooded area the property overlooks.

The high bricked walled garden that surrounds the property offers both privacy and security and a great location with two marinas in walking distance from The Vicarage - Endeavour Quay Marina and Haslar Marina, and a 30 second walk to the harbourside.

High bricked walled garden, balcony, terrace, BBQ.

Space for one or two marquees for weddings, events or corporate events. Marquees to be booked via Harrington Homes.

Parking:
Parking spaces off road for 3 cars. Additional spaces available on road.

The interior includes door handles and finger panels made out of gunmetal by French prisoners of war when the house was requisitioned during the Napoleonic war for the Commandant of the Royal Engineers. The servants’ quarters that were at the top of the house remain as does the original second staircase that the maids, housekeeper, cooks and butlers used in the 19th and part of the 20th century.

During the time when the nearby moats and ramparts were being built the uncle of Jane Austen resided in the property and Jane used to visit her uncle regularly during his stay at The Vicarage. Could she have been inspired perhaps by her visits to the house to write any of the chapters of Sense and Sensibility or maybe Pride and Prejudice which appeared in 1811 and 1813...?

In the 2nd World War the cellars of the house were open to everyone in the area for shelter during the many raids that this significant maritime area suffered during the 1939-45 period. The Vicarage was given protected status in the 1950's when the building was at risk of being demolished to make way for more modern housing.
